Plant Characteristics :
Habit : Annual shrub
Habitat & Ecology : Terrestrial, Cultivated. Can grow on any type of soil.
Occurrence : Available through out W.B.

Status : Infrequent
Botanical Character : Annual, tall herbaceous, growing upto about 1 metre. Stem clothed with long deflexed hair. Leaves polymorphous, more or less cordate, lower ovate, upper palmately 3-7 lobed, irregularly toothed, hairy on both surfaces. Petioles and stipules hairy. Involucral bracts fulvous- hairy, shorter than calyx, caducous. Corolla yellow with purple centre. Capsules 2.5-7.5 cm, fulvous-hairy, oblong, lanceolate, acute. Seeds, many, subreniform, blackish with few raised striae.

Leaves contain sitosterol and its glucosides. β-sitosterolis also present in fruit-husk and petals. Glucoside of myricetin and glycoside of cyanidin have been identified in flowers. Macrocyclic musk compounds and phospholipids are present in seeds.

Medicinal Uses :
i) Uses in Modern Medicine : Poultice made of whole plant, made into a pulp, applied to chest in bronchitis. Mucilage from root and leaves used in veneral diseases and urinary discharges. Juice of fresh plant is febrifuge and expectorant. Fatty fraction of fresh aqueous extract of seeds has antitumour activity in vitro. A decoction or infusion made from seeds is useful in nervous debility, hysteria and other nervous disorders.

ii) Uses in Ethnic/Tribal Medicine : Seed paste with milk used to cure itch and in snake bite. Seeds diuretic, demulcent, stimulant, antispasmodic, stomachic, tonic, carminative and aphrodisiac.

iii) Uses in Ayurvedic Medicine : Seeds are aphrodisiac, cardiotonic, digestive, carminative and diuretic. They are useful in ophthalmopathy, cardiac debility, cough, asthma, bronchitis, hyperdipsia, burning sensation, vitiated conditions of Kapha and Pitta, nausea, dyspepsia, flatulent colic, diarrhoea, stranguary, gonorrhoea, spermatorrhoea, calculi, halitosis pectoral diseases, vomiting, hysteria and other neural disorders, pruritis, leucoderma and general debility.
