Botanical Character : Stout, shrubby, rhizomatous perennial herb with short aerial stem. Leaves densely crowded in massive rosettes, large, simple, alternate, thick, fleshy, coated with wax, tips spiny. Leaf-edges distinctly sinuate and bearing mostly reflexed spines on the eminences. Flowering rare, gigantic racemose inflorescence with ultimate brances of few-flowered cymes. Flowers bisexual; perianth more or less funnel-shaped, stamens inserted at the base of the petals; ovary fleshy, 3-locular; ovules numerous in each cell. Fruit ovoid globose or cylindrical coriaceous erect-beaked capsule; seeds many.
