Plant Characteristics :
Habit : Erect herb
Habitat & Ecology : Terrestrial, Common in dry shady places
Occurrence : Througout the state upto an elevation of urivi (Tam.), Uttaren (Tel.)1000 m

Status : Abundant
Botanical Character : Erect biennial or perennial coarse herb with woody base. Branches striated pubescent. Leaves simple, petiolate, very variable, thick, young finely tomentose on both surfaces, mature usually glabrate on upper side with closely appressed hairs on the lower surface, apex short acuminate. Flowers numerous, greenish white, on maturity deflexed stiffly against woolly pubescent rachis of terminal elongated rigid spikes. Bracteoles ending in a spine which hardens in fruit and fall off with fruit. Sepals 5, subequal. Stamens 5, staminodes truncate. Utricle broadly oblong, enclosed in hardened perianth; seeds oblong, brown.
