Plant Characteristics :
Habit : Medium sized tree
Habitat & Ecology : Terrestrial, Wild, grows in the Sub-Himalayan tract upto an elevation of 1700 m.
Occurrence : Occurs in Terai and Dooars area upto 600 m.

Status : Frequent
Botanical Character : Medium sized tree attaining a height of upto 15 m. Leaves 30 by 15 cm in size, oblong or orbicular, obtuse or shortly acuminate, narrowed at the base, crenate-denticulate, glabrous, clustered at the end of the branchlets; old leaves are often red/ purple ; petiole 0-2.5 cm. Flowers usually few, sessile, large, showy, greenish white and pink, foul-smelling in thick, dense terminal spikes 8-20 cm long ; bracts 3, unequal. Calyx total length terete, campanulate, obscurely pubescent; lobes ovate, obtuse. Petals white, elliptic. Filaments red. Ovules in two rows in each cell of the ovary. Fruit large, globose green, surmounted by an enlarged mouth having a depressed pit at the vertex within the calyx-teeth. Seeds ellipsoid.
